How walkable is your neighborhood?

This is a pretty cool website. Not sure how accurate it is but it probably provides a relatively fair assessment. My current location got a 74, my apartment on Alexander was in the 80's.

  1. As you could probably guess... our house got a score of 0. My office neighborhood got a score of 88.

  3. That is pretty cool. And a little creepy - Google knows everything.

We moved from 91 in Arlington to 2 at our house (not zero!)

It seems to be a good measure of how much useful stuff is in your hood and how close is it, but I dunno if that makes the seamless transition to walkability. My office got a 97, but due to other factors besides availability of stuff (such as condition of sidewalks, friendliness of intersections, and availability of shade trees or other amenities), I don't think Indy is nearly as pedestrian-friendly as Arlington was.

The indicators they chose were interesting too: Fitness? Why do I need a gym when I have a dog and 8 acres? Coffee shops?!? Perhaps this was written for east coast liberals??

Side note: it listed our closest restaurant as Dairy Queen. I think "restaurant" should have been in quotes.

  4. Oh. Well, here you go.

"We'll be the first to admit that Walk Score is just an approximation of walkability. There are a number of factors that contribute to walkability that are not part of our algorithm:"

  5. Our current apartment in Pittsford had a score of 38.

Fairport (where we are looking to buy a house.....that's right buy) has a score of 60.
