Random Post: What is this?

Does this kind of art make any sense? I don't get it. It's the album cover from Joeseph Arthur's Come to Where I'm From. I guess album covers in general don't make much sense.

  1. I love modern art -- even when I hate it. It's about how it makes you feel when you experience it -- stiring genuine emotion. And no rules.

This picture creeps me out -- looks like a scary decaying mummy, zombie thing. Does Joseph Arthur like himself? Seems like he has a poor self-image. Also that he likes misery.

  2. Clearly he's a depressive. But whats with the bone? And the bugs? And why are the bugs 2 different colors? None of it makes any sense.

Beatles in the art symoblism world mean a lot. Scarabs are very much present in Egyptain art and other beatles have a lot of religions symbolism. check out this page: http://www.insects.org/ced2/beetles_rel_sym.html

Maybe this artist is talking about ashes to ashes, dust to dust- hense the darkness in color.
The bugs are their inverse in color so one would actually be green and the other would be orange...maybe the red is hell and blue is heaven...
Bones remail long after we are gone..maybe making him want a lasting impression. Structuraly they are strong and we all have them (sorry jellyfish:(

I love art!! and I am with you JoAnna, you summed it well-- I love art, even when I hate it!!

  4. It's the duality of our current red state / blue state delineations and how our polarized political views are tearing us apart. And how the government (the bugs) is eating us alive -- exploiting our small differences until we don't even recognize that we are all made of the same muscles and bones and should just all get along.

I don't know, dude. It's all just part of the general overall feel of creepy raw-ness. Why would some dude cut off his facial hair and give it to a chick who then glues it to her face??? Because it freaks people out, breaks all sorts of rules and makes you think about shit.

There doesn't need to be a reason. It's all about the emotion.

But what do I know? You are looking for reason in the symbols and maybe that's part of his point too. Does Don McLean describe the turmoil of a generation in "American Pie" or is it just a bunch of weird random thoughts strung together?

Who knows? But I do like pie.

  6. WHOA. Whatever his deal (he's a very heaven and hell kind of singer) he's one of the few musicians who do their own cover art.

We should analyze more album covers; this was very educational.

My word verify was rumuyyic. I likee..
