I went to a sock retreat at my LYS - "local" (ha! it's 45 minutes away) yarn shop and one of the ladies brought one of these. They are pretty crazy. I guess the Red Cross had bunches of them for sock making during the world war(s)??. There is, like, one person in Indiana that knows how to restore them.
